Your day begins at the legendary Giza Plateau, where your guide will introduce you to the three iconic pyramids of King Cheops, King Khafre, and King Menakaure. You will have free time to enter one of the pyramids (at an additional cost; guides are not permitted inside). A short drive across the plateau brings you face to face with the mysterious Great Sphinx, the timeless symbol of ancient Egypt.
Continue your journey with a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum, the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. Its vast galleries showcase Egypt’s greatest masterpieces, with a special focus on the complete treasures of King Tutankhamun, displayed together for the first time in a modern, immersive setting. Your guide will highlight the most important artifacts before allowing free time to explore the museum at your own pace.
Later, head to the famous Khan El Khalili Bazaar, where you can wander through the lively alleys, browse traditional shops, and bargain for unique souvenirs. During the day, you will also have the opportunity to visit a Papyrus Institute to learn how this ancient Egyptian art is still made today.
You will be picked up from your hotel in Cairo by your Egyptologist guide who will drive you to Alexandria city on an air-conditioned vehicle (3-hour-drive) where you will start a fascinating tour of this famous city, the second-largest city in Egypt. Alexandria has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern and is famous for its Roman remains. As this is a private tour, you can determine the amount of time you will spend at each of the sites you visit. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 312 B.C. and was the capital of Greco-Roman Egypt. Your first stop in this historic city is the catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa, a Roman burial site whose family tomb reveals the merging of Egyptian and Roman art and architecture. Descend below ground to visit the tomb and Caracalla Hall. Back above ground, continue to Pompey's Pillar, an 82-foot (25-meter) granite column built to honor Emperor Diocletian, who freed the besieged city and brought food to its starving people. Next to Pillar, you will find the remains of Serapion Temple. Continuing the Roman theme, the next site you will visit is the Roman amphitheater, possibly the best-preserved Roman site in Egypt. The site also includes the remains of a Roman street and homes. After lunch (additional cost), you will visit the famous Alexandria Library. In contrast to the ancient architecture found throughout Egypt, the Norwegian-designed building is a striking piece of modern design. A copy of every book published in the world is kept in the library, making it one of the great literary sites in the world. The library also houses several exhibitions relating to the history of Egypt and a display of rare antique books (for an additional cost). After the conclusion of your tour, you will be driven to your hotel to check in. Overnight in Alexandria.
Note: The library of Alexandria is closed on Fridays and Saturdays
After breakfast at your hotel, you will tour the unforgettable Citadel of Quiatbay. The Citadel was built over the ruins of Pharos lighthouse, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. You will walk and relax on a tour of the Montazah Palace and its green gardens. After the conclusion of your tour, you will be driven back to your hotel in Cairo for drop-off.
