Step into a different side of Cairo on this unforgettable Coptic Cairo Day Tour, where history, faith, and culture come together in the heart of Old Cairo. With your own private Egyptologist guide and comfortable air-conditioned transportation, you’ll explore some of the most important Christian landmarks in Egypt – places rich with stories that date back centuries, even before Islam arrived in the region.
This tour is perfect for travelers looking to dive into Egypt’s diverse spiritual history and see a different, more peaceful side of Cairo.
Your day begins with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in Cairo or Giza. Sit back and relax as your guide gives you a quick introduction to what you’ll discover today in Coptic Cairo.
Our first stop is the famous Hanging Church, one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Egypt. Built atop the southern gate of a Roman fortress, it almost seems to float – which is how it earned its name. Inside, admire the wooden ceiling shaped like Noah’s Ark, and learn how this church once served as the residence of the Coptic Patriarch between the 7th and 13th centuries.
Next, we visit the historic Ben Ezra Synagogue – a place where legends and history intertwine. This beautiful building was originally a 4th-century Christian church before it became a synagogue in the 9th century. It’s believed to be the spot where the prophet Jeremiah gathered the Jewish people after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. Inside, you’ll discover stories and secrets from Cairo’s once-thriving Jewish community.
After a morning full of inspiration and discovery, we’ll take you to a cozy local restaurant where you’ll enjoy a delicious Egyptian lunch. It’s a great chance to relax, chat with your guide, and soak in the atmosphere of the city.
Refreshed and ready, we continue to the Church of Abu Serga, a deeply spiritual site believed to be built over the place where the Holy Family – Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus – took refuge during their time in Egypt. This church is not only a sacred spot but also an important historical site where many Coptic patriarchs were ordained.
Our final stop is the Church of the Virgin Mary in Haret Zuweila, thought to be the oldest church in the area. Though it likely dates back to the 10th century, inscriptions inside suggest a 12th-century consecration. This church also served as the seat of the Orthodox Pope of Alexandria for over a century.
At the end of this spiritual and cultural journey, we’ll drive you back to your hotel in comfort, leaving you with beautiful memories and a deeper appreciation for Egypt’s rich Christian heritage.
