Our first stop is the famous Hanging Church, one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Egypt. Built atop the southern gate of a Roman fortress, it almost seems to float – which is how it earned its name. Inside, admire the wooden ceiling shaped like Noah’s Ark, and learn how this church once served as the residence of the Coptic Patriarch between the 7th and 13th centuries.
Next, we visit the historic Ben Ezra Synagogue – a place where legends and history intertwine. This beautiful building was originally a 4th-century Christian church before it became a synagogue in the 9th century. It’s believed to be the spot where the prophet Jeremiah gathered the Jewish people after the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem. Our final stop is the Church of the Virgin Mary in Haret Zuweila, thought to be the oldest church in the area. Though it likely dates back to the 10th century, inscriptions inside suggest a 12th-century consecration. This church also served as the seat of the Orthodox Pope of Alexandria for over a century.
