These awe-inspiring rock-cut temples were built by Pharaoh Ramses II (1303–1213 BC) to honor his reign and divine legacy. The Great Temple features four colossal statues of Ramses seated at its entrance, with interior walls richly decorated with scenes of military triumphs—most notably the Battle of Kadesh.
Adjacent is the Smaller Temple, dedicated to Queen Nefertari, Ramses’s beloved wife, and the goddess Hathor. The façade displays the queen standing alongside the pharaoh—an exceptionally rare honor in ancient Egyptian art.
